Today our Winnipeg dentistry team talks about family dental services and how it adapts for individuals from kids and teens to adults and seniors, all with the goal of restoring and maintaining healthy smiles.
Our Dental Services for Your Family
Kids
Kids require regular dental care because it helps them form a strong foundation for their continuing oral health. At Odyssey Dental Care we are able to provide children with a range of dental services to help them keep their smiles healthy.
Starting with their first visit (ideally at six months of age) all through their school-aged years, we work with them to keep their smile healthy. We provide regular cleanings and exams and review proper preventive hygiene techniques at each appointment to ensure their teeth receive appropriate care at home.
For kids that are at a higher than average risk of developing tooth decay, or for children that have special circumstances or needs, we might recommend restorative dental services or a customized treatment plan.
Teens
As teens grow more independent, their oral care routine will have to grow along with them. They should see their dentist approximately every 9 months to keep preventive dental care a priority.
We know that many teenagers worry about their appearance which includes having a white and healthy smile. This is why our dentists educate teens on the link between the appearance of their smiles and dental hygiene practices.
If a teen requires orthodontic care we might refer them to an orthodontist for a thorough examination and possibly orthodontic treatments which could include braces, a retainer, clear aligners, or another appliance.
Adults
Many people develop early-stage gum disease in adulthood, potentially resulting in painfully swollen gums and other oral health issues. Preventive care should continue to be top of mind for adults, including at-home care and regular visits to the dentists for hygiene cleanings.
Many people will need their wisdom teeth removed in early adulthood. Sometimes, oral surgery, specialized care, appliances, or other treatments will be recommended for specific issues such as TMJ Disorder or sleep apnea.
If restorative services such as crowns, bridges, or fillings are required, we are happy to offer these and address any questions and concerns you may have.
Seniors
As you get older, your mouth and teeth will naturally change, and you may also have new needs in terms of medications. This can increase your risk for developing dental health problems, including:
- Dry mouth (caused by medications)
- Need for tooth replacements or dentures
- Tooth decay or cavities
- Oral cancer
- Gum disease or periodontitis
You might find your teeth becoming less sensitive to hot or cold temperatures and maybe even cavity pain. This is because the nerves of your teeth can become smaller as you age. On the other hand, if your gum tissue starts receding your teeth could become even more sensitive as the root tissues are left exposed.
The wear and buildup of plaque on your tooth enamel might also make you more susceptible to other conditions. Your dentist should be able to examine your teeth and help correct these issues by recommending the appropriate treatments which may include dental implants, restorative services, a gum graft, gum therapy, or oral surgery.
